INSTRUCTIONS PART I

Brief for ethnographic study

Hello There,

Imagine a week when all of the decisions you make are out of your control …

Thank you for agreeing to participate in this social experiment. All together there are 10 of you (one group of five in Brighton, one group of five in London) involved.

Between Monday 29th October and Sunday 4th November you will be paid for keeping a video diary, uploading thoughts, pictures and videos onto a blog (that will be set up by Tim Gardner and Fraser Millward from The Lounge).

Your tasks will vary however there will be a set requirement of you each day. You will be required to upload a minimum of 4 photos per day, write a minimum of 200 words in your blog and record minimum 2 mins of video per day. You will then need to upload this video on to YouTube and send the link to Alfred.tong@theloungegroup.com. You will also be required to keep ALL the videos on the camera you have been provided with. These will be collected in at the end of your diary so you MUST NOT DELETE ANY OF THE VIDEOS FROM THE CAMERA.

PAY

You will be paid £100 for your input. The more content you provide us with, the better. In fact, for the four of you that give us the most (and the most interesting stuff) there will be an extra £50 each. Tim and Fraser will be in regular contact to make sure that all is well. Please let us know as soon as possible if you have any technical issues so that we can sort them out.

N.B. It is vital that you complete your tasks when we ask you to do them, or the whole project will fall apart. Your cash will depend on it!

But bear with us, we promise it will be fun and unlike anything you have ever been asked to do before!

Task 1

Sunday 28 October

Upload onto your blog a short video introducing yourself and covering the following topics:

Name

Age

Occupation/or whatever you are studying

What your interests are including favourite bands, clubs, clothes, designers, artists, and anything else that you are passionate about.

Dreams and ambitions

Who/what do you normally turn to when you want advice about something (anything at all)?

How much do you trust what you see/read on the internet?

What is the best thing you have found on the internet recently, something that you have passed on to one of your mates?

Can you also answer the following question in as much detail as possible:

‘What do you think of the idea of someone, who you don’t even know, making all of your decisions for you?’

N.B. You must do this on Sunday in order that everyone else in the groups can see your blogs on Monday morning. Again this is vital to the success of the project.

That will be all for now. You will receive your next set of instructions in your inbox on Monday at 9.30am. Please make sure you read these instructions carefully before you go to college or work. It should take no longer than five minutes.

Please send an email to Tim (Tim.Gardner@theloungegroup.com) that you have read the email and understood it. We will sort out any problems or concerns asap.

Should I wear a neckerchief today? ALF LONDON

INSTRUCTIONS

Imagine a week when all of the decisions you make are out of your control …

As you already know there are two groups: Group London and Group Brighton.

Group London will effectively control the lives of the Group Brighton and vice versa.

This is how it will happen:

Over the course of the week you are going to pose a question every day on a this blog.

Your question will be answered by the five members of the other group. You in turn will answer the questions that they set.

For instance, let’s assume you are in Group London:

You pose the question: ‘I have a job interview today, what shall I wear? - JOHN LONDON' to Group Brighton.

REMEMBER - YOU MUST PUT YOUR NAME AFTER YOUR POST AND THE GROUP YOU ARE IN (LONDON/BRIGHTON). YOU CAN THEN RESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS BY ADDING A COMMENT TO THE POST. YOU MUST ALSO INCLUDE YOUR REASONS FOR INCLUDING THIS COMMENT AND DON'T FORGET YOUR NAME AND LOCATION AGAIN!

Group Brighton might respond like this:

Answer 1: ‘Nothing’

Answer 2: ‘Cling film’

Answer 3: ‘An 80s power suit’

Answer 4: ‘A latex dress’

Answer 5: ‘A shellsuit’

Once you have received the answers, you must act upon the one answer that appeals to you most.

For example, if you think that you would like to turn up to your job interview wearing ‘Nothing’, then that is what you will do.

We then want you to document the following, primarily with video and pictures and also a short blog:

  1. Your immediate feelings towards the daily challenge.
  2. The consequences of your choice.
  3. How others responded to your choice i.e ‘what is it like to turn up to a job interview naked?’
  4. What did you think of all the possible choices?

So on each day of the week you will do four things:

  1. Set a question before 6pm. This question will be for the following day.
  2. Answer five questions set by the members of the other group by 9am the following morning.
  3. Act upon your favoured answer that day.
  4. Document what happens using your other blog which you will already have details for. Include video, photos and written descriptions.
